Dozens of games to go on sale May 24th through June 1st in the Google Play Store ‘Because We May’

How about a really hot gaming sale to kick of your Memorial Day Weekend? Because We May is celebrating those app stores that give developers the ability to price their accomplishments however they wish. As a result there are 39 titles that will go on sale between May 24 and June 1 in the Google Play Store. It’s not limited to the Play Store as you will also find a bunch other titles for the iOS App Store, Steam, the Mac App Store, and others.

There still could be even more games by the time the 24th rolls around since developers have until the 22nd to jump onboard. So far the list has some really good titles like World of Goo, Shadowgun, Riptide GP, and Osmos. This is a great opportunity to try out some new games. Unfortunately we don’t have the sale prices yet, but hit the break for the complete Google Play Store list along with links for each game.

Orders For T-Mobile’s HTC Amaze 4G Delayed, Possibly Due to Apple Patent Dispute

In a somewhat unexpected turn of events, it seems that at least one customer ordering an HTC Amaze 4G from T-Mobile.com has been alerted that shipments of the device have been delayed "due to an unforeseen issue with receiving the product from the manufacturer." It looks like T-Mobile is sending out emails to customers informing them that  they have no "estimate as to when the product will be available," and suggesting that customers explore other options in the meantime.

Of course, with the recent shipment halt of AT&T's One X and Sprint's Evo 4G LTE, one is tempted to speculate that this delay may be due to HTC's current patent spat with Apple, but no one (outside T-Mobile or HTC) knows if that's the case just yet.

Samsung Galaxy S3 full firmware now available, time for all those ROMs and feature to start spreading

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is about the most anticipated device of 2012, and it was only a matter of time before someone got a hold of all the new features it comes with. The guys at XDA Developers have managed to get the device’s full stock firmware, and it is now up for grabs.

Simply put, this is a gold mine for custom ROM developers. They will be able to take advantage of all software features, like Smart Stay and S-Voice. Devs are working on it as we speak, so let the fun begin.

We will also be able to extract all those .apk files. People have already extracted S-Voice and it is working with other devices. It does seem to have its fair share of issues, though. It should mostly work with other Samsung smartphones. Users can download it here if they are feeling adventurous.

If you want to download all 786 MB of Galaxy S3 glory, just head over to the XDA Developers thread and have at it! At least to look around until we start seeing it being ported to all other devices.

S-Voice Pulled from the Galaxy S III, Download the App Now!

After the big Galaxy S  III announcement we knew it would only be a short amount of time before the cool software features were pulled from the phone for use across other Android devices. One of the more noteworthy GSIII features is the S-Voice app, basically Samsung’s version of Siri. Thanks to XDA member Ascarface23, we now have a working S-Voice apk that has been tested to work on various Android 4.0.4 roms across various devices. I was able to successfully install the app on my Galaxy Nexus running the latest AOKP rom and it has also been reported to work on CM9 as well. If you want to check out this great GSIII feature for yourself, grab the download below.

How to install: You can either install it through the Android package installer like any other 3rd party app but reports suggest it is better to install it as a system app. To install as a system app do the following:

  1. Make a nandroid backup! (just to be safe)
  2. Download the apk on your SD card
  3. Using a file manager, copy/paste into system/app
  4. Longpress the apk file from Within system/app, select “permissions” and change to r-w, r, r

Side note: I should mention one thing from my brief experience with the app. Don’t try to change the wake up command because that will usually result in a force close situation and you will have to reinstall and start over. I would just leave it at “hi Galaxy” and just be happy that it works. :-)

China Approves Google’s Acquisition Of Motorola, Deal Expected To Be Finalized Next Week

motorola-logo_thumbWhen we last heard about Google's deal to buy Motorola, the EU  and the US had approved the deal. The one major market we were left waiting on is China and now, according to the Associated Press (known around here as "the other AP"), the country's regulators have given Google the green light. The deal is now expected to close next week.

The biggest asset of the deal is, of course, Motorola's 17,000+ patents. Google has already promised that it will not interfere with Motorola's dealings and continue to operate the company entirely independently. The approach would make sense in the context of rumors that Google would be expanding it Nexus line.

Facebook acquires Karma, let’s see if something good comes around

Well Facebook just seems to be on a roll lately. The Social Network is purchasing companies left and right, with the most recent including Instagram and Lightbox. But now they have decided to acquire Karma, a social gifting app.

Simply put, Karma allows users to connect to Facebook via their app and send people gifts. Why would Facebook want this service? Surely, Facebook could further integrate this service to create more revenue from gift sales. Karma states that the app will continue to run as usual, but now with a stronger backbone.

It seems like the Social Network is trying to get its hands anywhere they can, so we would not be surprised to see Facebook purchasing more services soon. Meanwhile, people are getting upset at the Giant. Interesting concept: We can cry and kick all we want, but we can’t stop using Facebook. And it is spreading its wings to other areas of the inter webs now.

T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S III rears its LTE-less head at FCC, could it have Exynos inside?

Well, the good news is that creating various carrier variants isn’t slowing down the Samsung Galaxy S III’s launch in the US by too much. However, the bad news for those looking to use the phone on T-Mobile’s network is that you might have to do without LTE.

While it’s a bit understandable considering T-Mo won’t have an up and running 4G LTE network until 2013, I’m sure there would have been a few people who would have wished it was at least capable of LTE, so that they don’t require a new device next year.

On a side-note, we had all pretty much taken it for granted that the US variants of the Galaxy S III would have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 processor, thanks to the onboard LTE. That probably means that T-Mobile’s variant comes with Samsung’s own quad core Exynos instead.

Mini-PC-On-A-Stick For $74 With AllWinner A10 1.5GHz CPU And Android 4.0 (Sold Out Until June 10)

The concept of a mini-PC stick that runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was first seen at Mobile World Congress this year with the FXI Cotton Candy. That device is available for pre-order for $199 overseas. Now, we are seeing a new mini-PC-on-a-stick for a much more reasonable $74 making the rounds on some Chinese web sites. The unnamed Model #MK802 sports the following specs:

  • AllWinner A10 CPU @ 1.5GHz + Mali 400 GPU
  • 512MB RAM
  • 4GB Internal Storage
  • microSD slot (Up to 32GB)
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g
  • micro USB 2.0/OTG port
  • USB 2.0 Host port
  • Android virtual keyboard or 2.4G wireless keyboard + fly mouse
  • HDMI (1080p) Video output
  • Video Codecs: WMV/ASF/MP4/3GP/3G2M4V/AVI/MJPEG/RV10/DivX/VC-1/MPEG-2/MPEG-4/H.263/H.264/1280*720P HD 30 fps, 1080P/720*480 D1 30fps
  • Audio Codecs: AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, QCP, MP3, WMA, WAV, MIDI, M4A
  • Android 4.0 (ICS)

There are some reasons it’s cheaper than the Cotton Candy.

First, it runs a single-core 1.5GHz CPU while FXI’s stick has a dual-core 1.2GHz Samsung Exynos processor. Also, it has an HDMI port rather than a connector built in, meaning you’ll need a cable to connect it to a monitor rather than connecting it directly. And lastly, there is no mention of having Ubuntu installed, though it should theoretically be able to run it.

Right now, it seems to be out of stock with more coming in June 10th. The web site selling it has this message:

Because We May – Coalition Of Game Developers Set To Offer Deep Discounts In Celebration Of Pricing Freedom

From May 24th to June 1st, a boatload of your favorite Android games will be going on sale in celebration of pricing freedom. Because We May, a coalition of game developers that is "preparing for launch," announced the sale recently, explaining that the purpose of the sale is to "celebrate online stores that give us control over pricing."

The stores involved include the iOS App Store, Mac App Store, Steam, Google Play, and a few others (including a "Direct from Developer" option).

Games in the Google Play category (so far) include favorites like World of Goo, Osmos, Smuggle (and Snuggle) Truck, Canabalt HD, and 26 other great games.

Samsung Galaxy S III rooted, sort of

The Samsung Galaxy S III has been rooted ahead of launch…sort of. A developer going by the alias of Chainfire has successfully achieved root with the device’s release candidate firmware but never even had GS3 in hand. Instead he took advantage of a leaked software build and did the rooting virtually. The good news is that if Samsung doesn’t make any adjustments to the phone’s kernel rooting will be an easy process once users have the new Galaxy in hand. The whole process required only reloading the kernel with an altered adb binary and then manually installing SuperUser.

Chainfire isn’t making the build he is working with available to the public, and there is still time for Samsung to change things up. For now, it seems like the Korean smartphone maker has decided to forego adding extra hurdles for developers when it comes to rooting the Galaxy S III.
