LG Announces Early Next Year Release of XR Device

The extended reality (XR) market’s getting hot, folks. LG Electronics is jumping into the fray, planning to launch an XR device as early as next year.

This move comes as LG is eager to break into the XR market. They’re following the lead of tech bigwigs like Apple and Samsung Electronics. CEO Cho Joo-wan spilled the beans about the company’s XR plans during a press chat at CES 2024.

Oh, and did I mention? LG Electronics has been hustling on XR device development. They’ve even set up a dedicated ‘XR Business Department’ within the HE Business Division (the TV-making division, in case you’re wondering) this year. Cho says they’re putting the pedal to the metal on development as the XR business starts to take shape.

XR, which includes virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), is getting a lot of buzz. Especially with recent happenings like Apple’s pre-sales of the XR headset ‘Vision Pro’.

Now, here’s a fun fact. LG has dabbled in this product category before. Their VR history is brief, with past efforts like a smartphone-tethered headset in 2016 and a PC-tethered SteamVR prototype in 2017. But now, they’re gearing up for a new XR adventure.

A previous report from ETNews (in Korean, mind you) hinted that LG’s upcoming XR device might use the newly announced Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform. Qualcomm says several upcoming XR devices, including Samsung’s Google-powered headset and Sony’s ‘special content creation tool’, have already adopted this chipset.

South Korean media outlet SBS Biz reported that Meta’s been chatting with LG about sourcing OLED microdisplays for its own XR devices. So, LG’s already got at least one key component for the XR product that fits the bill.

And here’s the kicker. Presence Research predicts the global XR market will explode in the near future. They’re talking a jump from $41.56 billion in 2022 to a whopping $859.35 billion in 2030. Now, that’s what I call growth!
