Reasons for Galaxy S24 Ultra Price Increase

Samsung‘s just dropped the Galaxy S24 series. You might’ve noticed the Ultra model’s a bit pricier than the old one. It’s starting at $1,299.99, a whole $100 more than the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s base model at launch. Samsung’s saying it’s because of hardware upgrades. And nope, it’s not about the new AI features.

So, why’s the Galaxy S24 Ultra more expensive? It’s the hardware upgrades.

Samsung’s launched three new flagship Android smartphones today. We’ve got the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The first two? Not many hardware upgrades. But the Ultra’s got a few new tricks up its sleeve. For starters, it’s got a flat display, not a curved one. Makes the S Pen more efficient.

And there’s more. Samsung’s swapped out the old 10MP 10x optical zoom camera for a 50MP 5x lens. This means the Galaxy S24 Ultra can record 8K videos at 5x zoom with the new camera. The old model? It could only do 8K with the primary camera. The higher resolution and better processing mean you still get optical quality at 10x zoom. So, no loss there.

And here’s the kicker. The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s got a Titanium frame. That’s a big step up from the Armor Aluminum frame on the 2023 Ultra. Titanium’s pricier than Aluminum, so that bumped up the total BOM (bill of materials) cost of the phone. Add in the increased costs of other components, and you’ve got a $100 price hike.

What about the other two Galaxy S24 models? No price change there, which isn’t surprising. They’ve got no major design changes (they already had a flat display), no camera hardware upgrades, and they’re still rocking an Armor Aluminum frame. The base model’s $799.99 and up, while the Plus starts at $999.99. You can pre-order these new flagships from Samsung’s official website and other retailers.

All three models have the same AI features, by the way.

Every Galaxy S24 model’s got Samsung’s new AI features. The Ultra’s got a beefier camera setup and some extra AI-powered camera features. These aren’t compatible with the other models because of hardware limitations. But other than that, the Galaxy AI offers the same experience across the board. Doesn’t matter if you’ve got the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or Exynos 2400 version of the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. The AI features are the same.

So, there you have it. The Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ are here. And so is the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
