Samsung January 2024 Update Rolls Out for Galaxy S21 FE, Note 20

Samsung’s Galaxy S21 FE is getting a security update. It’s the January 2024 Android patch. The update is currently rolling out in some European countries. A broader release is expected soon.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Note 20 series is also getting the update. It’s now available in international markets, following its US release a few days ago.

The Galaxy S21 FE’s security update was first spotted by SamMobile. It’s now available for users in Ireland, Spain, and the UK. The firmware build number is G990BXXS6FWL5. The build number might differ in other regions, but the update’s content remains the same.

Samsung’s changelog confirms that the device is only getting this month’s security fixes. The official release notes state, “The security of your device has been improved.” The January 2024 security release contains fixes for 80 vulnerabilities.

75 of these are Android OS patches from Google. This includes one critical issue. The remaining five vulnerabilities are exclusive to Samsung products and system components.

If you’re a Galaxy S21 FE user, this update will patch all these vulnerabilities on your phone. Samsung has already pushed the January SMR to several other Galaxy devices. These updates may not be globally available yet, but it’s only a matter of time.

You’ll get a notification when a new update is available for your Samsung smartphone. You can tap on the notification to start the download and complete the update. To check for updates manually, go to Settings > Software update and tap on Download and install.

While this update doesn’t bring any new features, Samsung will soon push Android 14-based One UI 6.1 to most of these devices.

The Galaxy Note 20 series is also receiving the new security patch globally. Earlier this week, Samsung pushed the January update to the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in the US. The update is now available in Europe and Latin America.

The firmware build number is N98*FXXS9HXA1. The Galaxy Note 20 series is done getting feature updates, so no One UI 6.1 for the lineup. It will continue to get security patches until late 2024.
