Well, hello there, 2024! Samsung‘s already on the ball, dropping a fresh security patch on the first business day of the year. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are the lucky recipients. But don’t worry, other Galaxy devices will be joining the fun in the coming weeks.
So, what’s the scoop? As I type this, Samsung’s rolling out the January security patch to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 in Europe. The new firmware build numbers? They’re F936BXXS4EWL5 and F721BXXS4EWL5, respectively. And guess what? The rollout will soon hit other markets, including the US.
Now, let’s talk about the official changelog. It’s all about the latest security fixes. “The device is protected with improved security,” reads the only entry in the changelog for both foldables. These devices recently got the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update, packed with new features and functional improvements. And the next feature update? It should be One UI 6.1.
But wait, there’s more. The specifics about the vulnerabilities patched this month aren’t out yet. But as per usual, the new security update should have several dozen Android OS patches from Google. A few of these are expected to be critical security fixes. Samsung will also throw in a few Galaxy-exclusive patches with the Android fixes. But these won’t apply to Android products from other brands.
Samsung’s January 2024 SMR (Security Maintenance Release) will gradually reach other eligible devices. The Korean tech giant pushes monthly security updates to its flagships and premium mid-range models for a few years after launch. Then, they’re demoted to quarterly updates. Budget models start at quarterly updates and drop to bi-annual releases (two updates in a year) later.
Now, let’s talk about One UI 6.1. Samsung will introduce this with the Galaxy S24 series later this month—expected to debut on January 17. This new One UI version, still based on Android 14, brings several new AI features. From AI wallpapers and lockscreen effects to AI-powered camera enhancements and editing tools, there’s a lot to look forward to.
After the Galaxy S24 launch, Samsung will update its older flagships to One UI 6.1. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 should also receive the update. But don’t expect all new AI features to trickle down to older models. The company may share more details following the unveiling of the new flagships. And of course, we’ll keep you posted.
