Worldwide Tablet Sales Drop Again

Oh boy, here we go again. Tablet sales have taken another nosedive, folks. This time, Canalys spilled the beans with their latest report for the entirety of 2023. They didn’t just stop there; they went ahead and compared it to 2022, tossing in some tidbits from the years before for good measure.

Now, center stage, please. The headline’s screaming it loud and clear: “Tablet sales have plummeted yet again, with 2023’s figures now out in the open.”

So, here’s the lowdown. Tablet sales? They’ve shrunk by 10% in 2023 compared to the previous year. We’re talking about a drop from 150.7 million units to 135.3 million. And guess who’s still sitting pretty at the top? Yep, Apple. They’re not just leading; they’re doing it with confidence.

Oh, and before we dive deeper, here’s a quick ad break. Because, why not?

Back to the saga of tablets. Apple, the giant that it is, managed to ship out 54 million of these gadgets, snagging a whopping 40% of the market share. But, hold your horses, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Even Apple felt the sting with an 11% dip in sales year over year.

Samsung‘s not too far behind, sitting comfortably in second place with 25.6 million tablets sold. They’ve got 19% of the market cornered but haven’t escaped the sales slump either, facing an 11.5% decline. Lenovo, in third place, sold 9.3 million units and captured 6.9% of the market, but witnessed a sharp 19.4% drop in sales.

Now, for a twist in the tale. Huawei, yes, Huawei, has bucked the trend. They’re in fourth place, having shipped out 8.3 million tablets and claiming 6.1% of the market. But here’s the kicker: they saw a massive 32.1% surge in sales compared to 2022.

Amazon, trailing at fifth, sold 7.7 million tablets, holding onto 5.8% of the market. But, ouch, they’ve seen a significant sales plummet of 42.9% from the previous year.

Curious about the last quarter of 2023? Apple led the pack, followed by Samsung, Huawei, Lenovo, and Amazon. Huawei, in particular, had a stellar Q4, with a jaw-dropping 95.4% increase in sales year over year.

And for those of you who love a good visual, there’s a chart floating around showing tablet sales trends since 2016. It’s pretty clear 2022 was a high point for tablet sales, but it’s been a downhill ride since then.
